Removable Halloween Embellishment for Kristin’s Middle-Earth Wool Wizard Hat

Kristin arrived with a treasure from her travels — a handmade grey wool witch hat purchased in Middle Earth itself, during her journey through New Zealand. She wanted to enchant it for the Halloween season, but without sacrificing its future versatility. Her request: a fully removable, non-permanent embellishment set that harmonized with the playful aesthetic of her custom corset — a design featuring spirals of teal, pops of orange, deep violets, swirling candy motifs, and a certain beloved skeleton character in stripes.

For this transformation, I began by building a grand multi-loop ribbon bow crafted in a plaid featuring all her core colors. This became the anchor that tied the entire ensemble to her corset. Around the base of the hat’s cone, I sculpted a lush burst of florals: blazing orange sunflowers, ruffled purple mums, and sprays of teal baby’s breath that echoed the corset’s colors perfectly.

Twisting upward from the brim to the peak, black shimmering branches entwine the cone like enchanted brambles — lit from within by soft hidden LEDs that glow warmly at dusk. Scattered among them, glossy black bats swoop and hover mid-flight, their shapes catching the light and creating movement as she turns.

Standing proudly at the top: a tall, soft plush figure inspired by her corset’s central character motif, one arm draped around the hat’s cone and the other cradling a tiny glowing pumpkin lantern. A second illuminated pumpkin sits teasingly on the brim, casting a warm orange flicker across the florals.

To finish the silhouette, the brim’s upturned edge is adorned with vintage-style decorative pins and a trailing layer of dotted black tulle — adding both mystery and theatricality to her look.

Designed as a fully removable, secure embellishment system, Kristin can now shift this Middle-Earth hat between seasons — playful and glowing for Halloween, or timeless and unadorned the rest of the year.
